There is insufficient data t diagnose the problem. What were the
contents of /var/log/Xorg.log? What was displayed on the console? Did
you try running gdm/zdm/kdm/wdm by hand? did it fail? What graphics
card do you have? Were you using a non-free video griver, and perhaps
needed a newer version for the new kerel that got installed with the
upgrade?
Lacking details like that, it is very hard to help you find out
what went wrong, and to help you correctly upgrade to Lenny.
