Do you mean "report generation" from a BI perspective? If so, search for
"open source business intelligence" or "open source report generation".
JasperReports and Pentaho come to mind. The former is free, while the latter
is rather commercial, but both are open source. I have used Pentaho and
found it to be a "good (open source) reporting tool" :) You could also check
EclipeBIRT out.

Can you elaborate on what you mean by a "reporting tool" for "opensource
applications"?

I also never understood what you mean by reporting tool.

Can you elaborate please?
