This is an interesting point. And, I'd like to understand how often do
you have libraries which are not packaged and available in your
distribution.
Its not about package-ing, its about re-installing. for example, I
installed libgsm (in sabayon/gentoo world its media-sound/gsm package)
for a specific purpose (for libdhvani development). No other
common/basic application depend on this library to come to your system
automatically when you do re-install your main distro 6 month once. You
have to remember it or not it down somewhere and have to re-install this
library. In sabayon, I installed once, and its rolling whenever there is
a fresh update to libgsm in sabayon repos.
