[Ilugc] FC3 (was: reiser 4 vs xfs)

can anybody tell me which of these two is better(reiser 4 vs xfs)...?
No idea, I'm quite happy with ext3 on cryptoloop.
also... i am still undecided betw fedcore3 and drake 10.....
IMHO, FC3 is the best desktop distro that has come out of the RedHat
stable since RH 7.3. I still dislike the default Bluecurve desktop,
so I got rid of it and switched to xfce4 instead.
I was able to perform a manual, selective upgrade of my primary
system (a heavily-upgraded RedHat 7.3 install) using just the binary
rpms from FC3, and a few SRPMs from previous RedHat distros. The
salient features are:
Linux-2.6.8.1 (tarball from kernel.org)
Static /dev tree (no udev)
glibc-2.3.3-74 (from FC3)
gcc-3.4.2-6.fc3
rpm-4.3.2-21 (from FC3)
XFree86-4.3.0-55 (recompiled with gcc34 - upgrading to X.org is hairy)
xfce-4.1.99.2 (still buggy, but a lovely lightweight WM that's very
easy on the eyes - I recommend the GTK style with the Xfce-kolors
user-interface theme, but of course it's a matter of personal
choice. This rivals fvwm2 in all-round usability)
rxvt-2.7.8 (replacement for xterm, which is a resource hog. Just say no)
mozilla-1.6.0.dag (an old and reliable release - I'll move to firefox after
sorting out the dependencies)
postfix-1.1.13 (another legacy remnant)
cdrecord-2.0.1.1-5 (from FC3, supports native ATA CD-R/RW without IDE-SCSI.
One minor observation is that it burns CD-Rs at an average speed of 32x
on a 52x writer, with speed varying from about 20x at the start to 48x
near the end. Pretty good, but I'm not sure if it's HW-constrained)
ogle-0.9.2 (for DVD playback)
qryptix (my own stuff, to encrypt home directories)
and a bunch of other stuff to satisfy dependencies - not too difficult.
The entire setup is rock-stable, and astonishly responsive as a desktop.
All of this is on a PIII-1Ghz/256 MB RAM/i815e with on-board VGA/sound.
I'd recommend recompiling some critical pieces (kernel, glibc, xfree86,
some other libraries) using gcc-3.4.2 to take advantage of the 2.6
vsyscall, as well as other optimizations in gcc33 and gcc34 - the
-mregparm=3 for the kernel (transplanted from AIX/POWER/PowerPC,
which has had it since 1990(?)) is one of them.
I'm investigating replicating the install on a legacy PII notebook
with 96 MB RAM - more later. Anybody who thinks that Gentoo is the
best-performing desktop distro, especially on resource-constrained
systems, should seriously consider FC3 instead. It rocks!
(Get the FC3 ISO images from this month's Digit DVD instead of the
installable DVD from last month's LFY, if you can. CDROM drives
are more prevalent on legacy systems.)
