Yup, I checked it out an an Athlon-64/3200+ (2 GHz, single
core) with 1 GB dual-channel DDR 333 RAM and a 250 GB
SATA disk. Everything was detected and installed cleanly,
and with a few tricks I was able to get the boot times down
to 10-12 seconds to a text console.
1) Set runlevel to 3 in /etc/inittab
2) Turn off unnecessary services - YMMV, but for me
that included Avahi, Bluetooth, rpc*, nfs*, and a few
others. NetworkManager is another candidate.
3) Use a static IP instead of DHCP.
4) Disable SELinux or set it to Permissive.
sub-5 second boots are within reach, but it may require a
dual- or quad-core box with the / partition mounted on a
striped (RAID 0) dual-SATA drive configuration, and /boot
on an SSD if possible.
