The installer invariably crashed after ?wanting a network connection?

I am not aware of this.  Perhaps file a bug report.

Fresh Install from dvd was ok... except for no support for encrypted btrfs.

Known issue since Btrfs support itself has regressed as a fallout of the
ongoing Anaconda changes.  However I would recommend against using Btrfs
in any production instance in any case since it doesn't have a fsck that
can fix errors yet.

Grub2 of Kubuntu-12.04 cannot handle Fedora-17 entries at all.
