Dear Friends,
The week-long celebrations of free software came to an end with Software
Freedom Day celebrated in a grand manner at College of Engineering, Guindy,
Anna university on Sunday September 22. Nearly 150 participants attended
the programme and nearly 15 stalls vied for the top position in the stall
competition. The event was organised by Free Software Foundation Tamil
Nadu, Indian Linux Users Group Chennai and College of Engineering
GNU/LINUX Users' groups.
The event was a great occasion for experienced Linux buffs and newbies to
share their knowledge and discuss aspects related to community building.
Talks were held on ?Why we celebrate SFD?, Open Hardware, Internet
surveillance, Women and technology, Systems integration, Wikipedia and
Patents. A lot of the discussion was focussed on preserving our hard-won
freedom and extending it, both in the realms of hardware and software.
Students at the stalls presented a diverse variety of topics stretching
from the PRISM surveillance project to GIMP and Inkscape and Python and
Emacs. A group of students from Anjalai Ammal Mahalaingam Engg. college won
the best stall prize for their stall on network booting while students from
Sri Sairam Institute of technology came second. A special round of applause
for the students and volunteers who designed creative and thought-provoking
posters and charts that were widely shared online and displayed at the
venue.
Over the last week, volunteers went to many colleges across the city and
spread word about the event.
FSFTN would like to thank the staff members, CEG administration officials,
participants and above all, the committed and dedicated volunteer team for
making the event a grand success. We promise we will be back next year,
stronger than ever!
