By default LFS uses xorg.
I assumed the default settings for X.
Since it did not work for me, I tried X -configure which again was
unsusccesful.
Then I ran xorgconfig , being careful enough to select the correct video
modes
(as I have done the same ample number of times in slackware), but still the
problem persists.
I had the same problem in some other distro, about a year back, and I forgot
how I corrected that.

No valid modes found could be due to your resolution
settings. Are you using Xorg or XFree86? You might
want to check your resolution settings. Try running
xorgcfg (if using Xorg) or xf86cfg (if using XFree86).
These should help you configure the X server in the
GUI.
