If the print is hazy, try adjusting the side bar on the paper load
tray, so that it fits to the size of the paper.

I thought one had to align using the alignment option - this is not
available in linux - only in mac and windows. Actually I did not know
about alignment. (it prints an alignment paper which has to be scanned
in). I used thin paper for this and the paper got wrinkled which is why
I think it is not aligned properly. I tried to remove the cartridges and
reinsert them, but the alignment function did not work. I suppose I will
have to live with it until I buy a new cartridge or go to a windows
machine to do this?

The only downside is that printing in Linux consumes more ink. You
could deduce this from the wet paper that comes out. 

my paper is quite dry when it comes out. 
Also it is recommended that you buy a new catridge. The one that came
with your printer is just an introductory catridge and would last for
only 60 pages. A new catridge costs around Rs.350 (original HP as well
as compatible types). I would suggest buying a compatible catridge
over original.

why? will that not harm the printer
 A refill would give you a print of approx 200 pages.
Also learn to refill the catridge, this would be handy. Refilling a
catridge in Chennai costs Rs.50 at a minimum and Rs.100 at a max. "How
to refill" videos available in youtube!! 

cartridge is supposed to be non-refillable
