Which kernel? Red Hat 9.0 is pretty old. 2.6 kernels
use module-init-tools, compared to the earlier
modutils. So, I'd suggest you use earlier gcc versions
if you want to build one for Red Hat 9.0.
 
Note: I am able to build toolchain for gcc-3.2.3 and
glinc-2.2.5 binutils-2.16.1 with help of kegel's
crosstool

I'd highly recommend Kegel's scripts. Did you checkout
the crosstool build results?
