Implementing diskless clients in Linux is not so complicated as it sounds.
Here is my experience,
I've done this for a browsing center. The server is a Fedora Core 1 runs on a
P IV 1.7GHz,
256 MB RAM, 40 GB IDE HDD. I've downloaded & installed LTSP-4
(Core,XFree86,ltspcfg,ltsp_kernel)
as they instructed in the doc. Then for the client (it connects with rtl8139b
NIC) downloaded
the bootrom image from http://www.rom-o-matic.net/ and burnt it to the NIC's
bootrom. I've
configured DHCP (added entries for every client NOTE this is not done
automatically),nfs shares,
tftp. Then the clients are able to connect to the server and got X GDM Login
screen but both
my mouse and keyboard doesnt seems to be working, coz the default
configuration for client is
to support PS/2 mouse I changed it to serial thats it I've got all the clients
boots up and ready
to browser the net with out HDD or expensive H/W. I'm using 5 diskless
clients, its fine and fast.
The default Desktop Environment I'm using is XFCE. Its light weight (as it
says), customizable
powerful enough for a browsing center. I personally recommend XFCE for any
diskless X Linux clients.
