Try replacing 'intel' with 'vesa' in the driver section and check if
widescreen resolution works.
If it does, then the driver is the problem. You will have to add a new
modeline for the resolution that you want.
To check the modeline that is being used, 'xvidtune -show' would help.
Do this for both 'vesa' and 'intel' and see if there any differences.
