try with a live cd of some standard distro like mandriva, knoppix or
even puppy to see if there is some linux compatibility problem

Problem occurs on live cd also. I've tried Mandriva and Open Suse. The same
problem occurs on the live cd. What's really weird is, I've used Ubuntu Edgy
on my laptop and it worked perfectly well. When I upgraded to Feisty I got
this problem. I was hoping Gutsy would fix it but it didn't. Even weirder,
now if i install edgy, it doesn't work!
