There is a difference between desktop environments and window managers.
Gnome, KDE, XFCE are desktop environments and fluxbox, openbox, blackbox
etc. are window managers.
If you are willing to manage your desktop yourself, you can give the WMs
a shot. I use fluxbox and it serves my needs perfectly.
If you want a full fledged distribution based on fluxbox, check out
Fluxbuntu.
