We had already installed RH9 in servers & FC2 in Desktops. We are now
reviewing
the various distros of linux. Can any one suggest the best distributions
for Mail server,
File server & Desktops seperately.
I can brief you what runs on Desktops and Servers:
*Desktops*
1. Word processing
2. Spreadsheets
3. Email
4. Web browsing
5. Accounting
The average user has
a> A very limited familiarity with the operating system,
b> Experience with windows and MS applications and expects the same look
and feel.
c> expects no degradation in speed and apparent performance
*Engineering desktop *
1. Word processing
2. Spreadsheets
2. Email
3. Web browsing
4. Pro/Engineer
5. Simulation and analysis
The average user has
a> Some familiarity with the operating system,
b> Experience with windows and MS applications, but no issues with
learning a new OS
*Mail Server*
1. Qmail (POP) (Planning to go for IMAP)
2. Squid
3. Sendmail
4. Sophos antivirus
*File Server*
1. Samba (Planned to Run NFS)
2. Apache (Planned to Run PHP)
