Use data cable. Connect it to the PC/laptop.
Unless you have utility like `powertop` running and have suspended your USB
ports, it should just mount the drive and also pop up an dialog asking what
you want to do with the mounted device.
With `usb suspended` using powertop it takes a while for the camera or any
usb device to get detected due to poll frequency. in such cases USB is not
always on.
Btw, Works for me using Ubuntu 10.04 and Sony cybershot W-570
