2-Thunder takes Apple machines to a very high supercomputing grade.
Thunder, I think runs on a 1000+ Apple machine cluster.
No, that's the 'Big Mac' machine at VPI built by Srinidhi Varadarajan,
which was no.6 on the TOP500, but didn't make it this time because
it has been taken apart for rebuilding. It originally used Apple
servers with dual G4s in a tower case, but they're being replaced
by Apple XServe 1U dual-G4s.
Thunder is based on Intel Itanium2 (Madison) nodes (probably dual
or quad CPU, I'm not sure) and Quadrics interconnect. A planned CPU
upgrade next year will replace the Madison CPUs with dual-core
Montecito CPUs, almost doubling the peak performance without any other
change. It may get to No.1 with this upgrade.
