First of all FOSS is not an entity, it is an acronym for Free Open
Source Software.
There are many FOSS projects that need help (freshmeat.net,
sourceforge.net). Your friend needs to decide first what *he would
like to do* *what makes him tick*, then pick a project in the area of
his interest and go with it.
He should not wait for (or expect) someone to tell him what to pick/do.
