Let me give a brief explanation of how it works.You publish SPF
records for your domain. So, in your DNS, you add entries like
mydomain IN TXT "v=spf1 +mx -all"
When a remote server receives a mail, it does a TXT look up, sees that
only those machines with an MX entry can send record, and so sees if
the sending machine has an MX entry and accepts it. Otherwise, it can
reject it.
But now, what the server does on a failure(it can be a soft fail or
fail), depends on the administrator of the receiver's SMTP server.
The docs at openspf.org are really nice.
So, returning to your question of when to add a domain and when not to
- you don't add any domains. You define an SPF record for your
organisation(domain). And configure your mail server's actions based
on your needs. Thanks
