Main Memory based File systems can be of good help only if you have
big memory size. Also since the data is lost during a reboot, you
need to have a system in place to backup the files (if you need to) to
a permanent storage and then restore it (which means longer
boot/reboot duration) and _zero_ guarantee for data recovery during
power failures.
STFW for 'tmpfs'. This HOWTO might be of some help:
http://www.linux.com/howtos/Multi-Disk-HOWTO.shtml
tmpfs can be used for /tmp, but how many apps write to /tmp
frequently?
Also, what filesystem are you using?
