Things are exciting in the world of O/S's which are geared towards
netbooks and other light handheld communications devices.
Two that I _have_ tried and both work very nicely with the Acer
Aspire One. (Of course, I continue to use Debian!)
1. www.moblin.org has a moblin v2 for test via a live USB boot or
qemu image.
Its interface is based on the Sugar interface for the OLPC. Worth
trying if only for the novelty. Perhaps it will change the way you
think of the UI.
You can also try it with qemu/kvm to expand your virtualisation
horizons :-)
2. Ubuntu has Ubuntu Netbook Remix for Jaunty available as a live USB
boot image. wiki.ubuntu.com/UNR
This also has an interesting interface based on dual vertical panels
instead of the usual horizontal ones. It has maximus which can
maximise screen space for specific applications.
Some that I have not tried:
1. Ubuntu has its UMPC version for Intrepid and Jaunty as a live USB
boot image. This is for low power machines with touchscreens.
2. Android from Google. This needs a download and compile for now. No
bootable image seems to be available.
Also of interest is Maemo.org which has the interface designed by
Nokia for its touchscreen phones.
Ubuntu also plans to release a remix based on the Moblin interface.
