I assume you mean this:

My 2c:

Line-of-sight optical communication through free air has been around for
a long time (~40 years) - but it has a number of serious disadvantages:

1) Precision engineering, accurate alignment and collimation required.
2) Beam interruptions due to intervening objects like birds, leaves, etc.
3) Vagaries of weather, etc.
4) Range limitation due to atmospheric scattering.

With the arrival of low-cost RF WLAN technologies like Wi-Fi, etc., which
do not have these disadvantages, line-of-sight optical is essentially
obsolete. The same effect is easily obtained at lower cost using WiFi
and high-gain directional antennae. You can easily modify a stock
Linksys WRT54G or similar wireless router to set up point-to-point
RF links.
