Python 2.4 is finally released today.
I hope python gets some serious spotlight at least now.
Is there any Indian Python Users Group, Specifically in India?
(No..don't point me to http://www.izpug.org/ there's
hardly anything going in their mailing list though the
company behind izpug - zeOmega - conducts 4-day training
session on Zope and Plone in Bangalore for a hefty sum
- not exactly very helpful!)
I don't know why Python Books are completely ignored even
in major book shops like HigginBothams which stocks
some really useless books that remain untouched since the
day they were put on the shelf.
Just a few days ago I went shopping for a book on Python
Programming at a nearby bookshop that sells CS/IT books.
The salesman who was confused for a moment at the mention
of "Python" told me that he doesn't have a Python book but
sweared he has a book on "Cobra Programming". I wanted to
laugh but was equally curious to see the book. That guy must
be dyslexic or something because the book was actually titled
"Programming CORBA".
Even some OSS enthusiasts in chennai are game to talk about
perl programming but ask me to come again when mentioned the
name "Python". Python in India - at least in chennai - is
little known to most of the developer community. None of the
mainstream IT education centers that I know of has a course
on Python (please do tell me if I am being blind to some
obscure institute that teaches python). Even php has gained
enough corporate support to form a PHP forum in chennai
( see http://www.phpcircle.org/ ;)
Unfortunately for Python, not a thing like this exists,
and it's left to the individual efforts of a few to acquaint
themselves in isolation. It's not going to change in a day
or two but the first stones must be laid. I know that even
the ILUGC's admin - Prabhu - is an ardent python fan
and I believe It's no big deal for him to start a
PUGC [Python User Group, Chennai] or at least a python
mailing list. I wish he could do that. Any supporters?
