I am actually with Arun here and probably his reply was misunderstood
in many ways causing this email. One thing needs to be noted here.
This list is not a free or paid technical support forum. Almost
everyone who has been in the list for some time is an enthusiast. They
try to help others with their own experience and knowledge out of
their own interest and generosity, not with the intent to gain respect
or something in that direction. The only thing we insist on this list
is to do prior homework before asking questions or for help on this
list. Even when the OP doesn't do that, almost always someone asks the
right questions to get more information to be able to help. What the
newbie posters should realize is that they should enough groundwork
and follow-up and not expect people on this list to give spoon-feeding
solution. There is no obligation to give the answers and whoever tries
to help cannot be blamed here. The newbies tend to just look for the
answers to their questions and send everything else to /dev/null which
imho is a very bad thing causing a lot of such problems.
The main theme behind mailing list guidelines is to help the people on
the list to be able to help the posters with their questions and
problems. They are merely to maximize the chance of getting a solution
to the question and at the same time not to irritate thousands of
subscribers by sending emails in SMS lingo or repeatedly turning deaf
ears to follow the guidelines. In mailing lists, the conversations are
archived and there is absolutely no need to top post and quote all the
emails in a thread with every reply. It is also considered a waste of
bandwidth by a lot of people. Interleaved, trimmed posting is easier
for conversations and for this reason we recommend it heavily on this
list.
I feel very sad that there are way too many meta discussions on this
list these days for a variety of reasons that lead to nothing
constructive.
And for your query on this list being restricted to software
professionals and enthusiasts, my answer is that it is open to
everyone who is interested in free software in one way or the other.
Even as a Mechanical engineer you are welcome to be on this list and
participate. A shining example in this direction is the late KG who
was a lawyer by profession but was a free software enthusiast who
participated actively in a lot of FOSS communities and contributed in
many ways.
