Also what do you guys suggest for IR remote controls? My requirement
is to use it along with XMMS as a remote and also for quite a few
other things like 'pon' and 'poff', /etc/init.d/nat start and stop ;)
Check out LIRC - Linux IR control. It's a piece of middleware that
can be configured to listen to signals from a wide variety of standard
IR receivers and decode a wide variety of universal remotes (like the
$2 made-in-Chine types you can get almost anywhere), and generate
keystroke sequences or fake a mouse event in response.
I used a stock IRDA port, LIRC, a standard universal remote, and
Xine to experiment with a Media-Center setup. I say 'experiment',
because it was not a great success - when you press a button
on the remote, you have to wait a long time before Xine responds
and starts doing something. By that time, most people would have
become impatient and pressed a dozen other buttons; in conjunction
with the modal UI employed by Xine, you have total disaster.
Others have had greater success with MythTV and XawTV front-ends,
but I've never tried these.
