There is a recovery service place at Vijayanagar Velachery. Opposite the
bus terminus. If you have valuable data, just take it there and see what
can be done.
Anecdote: I've had the same problem quite long ago and all hopes were lost
of recovering anything from it. One of my friends jokingly tapped the
hard-disk against the wall saying "work, you piece of crap! work!". It
worked ! :) As a last ditch effort I tried attaching the disk and it
started spinning. We could recover only (atleast) some data. But I'd
recommend against trying anything of that sort before you have given the
recovery service a shot..
