Though, i am able to establish a connection by
running adsl-start (found it out  by checking the
/var/log/messages shows the session id,local and
remote ip addresses),

You check your network status from the output of:

/sbin/ifconfig -a

Post the output. Does it show a ppp0 entry?

I am not able to browse. I
tried pinging to google, but only in vain.

You first try to ping an IP address.

1. See if you can ping your DNS server(s).
2. Ping an IP address, say, 66.94.230.46
3. Post the file contents of /etc/resolv.conf
