I have an ethernet internet connection. I wish to
share this with a laptop.
Check my documentation:

host
internet
eth0: 192.168.11.x
gateway : 192.168.11.1
Your ISP gives you a private IP address?
However when the server is in linux, two-way ping is
possible.
Test 1: Check if you can ping your ISP nameserver from
the host system
Test 2: Check if you can ping any website from your
host system
Test 3: Check if you can ping your ISP nameserver from
your laptop
Test 4: Check if you can ping any website from your
laptop.
Post the output of the following from your host and
your laptop:
/sbin/route -n
cat /etc/resolv.conf
Regards,
SK
