In fact, I was somewhat surprised to find that my colleagues who use
MacOSX or Windows routinely use "vlc" to play audio/video.


Well, I guess that's because VLC can play pretty much anything you throw at
it, and works on all platforms with the same exact interface.  Sometimes I
use VLC even on linux 'coz it's so easy to use and manage. No mucking about
with installing win32 codecs and all.
