Dear Kenneth,
You can use service command in debian, by installing the
debian-helper-scripts deb package. Then its as easy as writing
service <servicename> start|stop|restart
Of course as root :).
or run
/etc/init.d/<servicename> start|stop|restart
no need of installing any package.
