Actually, depending on how you define it, there never was an Indian
computer on the TOP500 list. There were (and still are) several
clusters (mostly IBM and HP) at Indian sites, however.
Kabru (at Matscience) was just a cluster of stock Supermicro dual-Xeon
nodes that were imported off-the-shelf from the US and hooked up using
Fast Ethernet and running some Beowulf variant. Anybody can build a
2x or 4x version of the same thing anywhere in the world, and many have
done so.
AFAIK, the Param cluster (which dropped off the list a few years ago)
was stock imported Sun UltraSparc nodes hooked together by CDAC.
Sun has been almostly completely wiped out of the TOP500 by commodity
x86 nodes running Linux, so it's no surprise that Param is also out.
