As part of NRCFOSS (nrcfoss.org.in) -- promoted and supported by Govt of
India -- activities, CDAC has come up with BOSS, derived from Debian, which
has been installed and supported in various centres at Indian Navy, CHiPS
of Chhattisgarh, school laptops in Punjab/Haryana, etc. Working with ELCOT,
a version suited for TN govt operations has been created and training has
been given to employees at various departments. Apart from the technical
aspect, the trainers have also strived to generate FOSS awareness (and
removal of many misapprehensions) among the trainees who are mostly
non-technical staff using computer for day-to-day operations. The official
notification should ease the way for more FOSS adoption.

This is a very old news item. Mr. Umashankar was transferred and posted
elsewhere. I recall that he had interacted with some of the ILUG-C members
who had put in sincere efforts to bring Linux into the system. Afterwards,
there were 2-3 MDs -- the move towards FOSS was not as highly visible, but
steady. ELCOT/NIC have introduced Linux servers, desktop Linux (NIC
develops many eGov applns in Ubuntu ; CDAC team has installed BOSS in the
Secretariat departments and trained the personnel).
Of course, most of the legacy applns have been Windows based and many
others too.
Hope, the slow and steady introduction of FOSS/Linux will gain more
momentum.
