2. It uses a dry pair (cable) that's run from their remote server site
(something like a DSLAM) to the client. Not sure if it actually
uses standards-based DSL signalling, but it's probable. It is an
always-on, 512 kbps service.

Iqara uses a DSL line that is always on.


3. You have a choice of using a USB DSL modem, or a DSL-to-Ethernet
gateway device (the latter is more useful for Linux). There's also
a router device that they're peddling for Rs.9000.

The DSL Line connects to an ethernet card (Rs. 300/- extra for a DAX card)


4. I asked if the line protocol was PPPoE - he didn't understand the
question, but claimed that there's both Windows and Linux support.
It seems to suggest a PPPoE connection, but it might just be NAT'ed IP
from their server.

Iqara uses PPPoE.  I think they use a MS Server at Thiruvanmiyur, and
they support both Windows and Gnu/Linux.

But, we have to "support" Gnu/Linux ourselves, by searching for the
driver for ethernet card if required, and compiling and installing
RP-PPPoE. Iqara service generally good.

But in some ways, counting bytes sent and received is taking away some
of the freedom in browsing freely.  I use iqara for _email_ only without
having to pay for a telephone call every time I check mail. But, I use
bsnl/vsnl for browsing, though it is relatively slow.
