Hello LUGies,
I am facing a weird problem in Emacs since I upgraded my Ubuntu dapper
drake to edgy beta a couple of days ago. I have tried asking it in
various related IRC channels (#ubuntu, #ubuntu+1, #ubuntu-in, #emacs),
but have got no answers/help than from few people who pointed out me
that it might me some problem with locales and X.
Problem: When I open Emacs, I get boxes in the content area, where text
should have got displayed. The same exists with tool tips. The menu
texts are disfigured.
When I try,
Options --> Mule (Multilingual Environment) --> Font/Fontsets --> 16
bit - standard
then I get text in the content area as usual, but still not in the tool
tips. And, this is not a permanent solution as well.
I tried:
* Remove .emacs file and reload, no change
* Remove all pakcages related to emacs, reinstall and check, no change
* Use friends' .emacs file, no change
Then did some google, as people pointed it out that there might be a
locale settings problem. I have scim input method ON and one of the
packages uim-common (which is input method library for korean, chinese
and other languages) shows some errors during install. But, I have been
able to work with scim for tamil (phonetic).
Then, when I was trying to remove emacs, it installed xemacs and it is
working well except a error is shown in a seperate window, containing
this message..
"(1) (xim-xlib/warning) Can't get fontset resource for Input Method"
Also, when I fire up xemacs from the terminal, it shows this...
"(1) (xim-xlib/warning) Can't get fontset resource for Input Method"
I also crossed checked this with my .xsession-errors file, which also
has the same warning message.
(gnome-panel:4775): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_style_finalize: assertion
`style->attach_count == 0' failed
Warning: Missing charsets in String to FontSet conversion
Warning: Missing charsets in String to FontSet conversion
Warning: Unable to load any usable fontset
I also made a search in launchpad which led me to these two bugs,
[1] https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/hoary/+source/emacs21/+bug/576
[2] https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/xfig/+bug/2066
I did a "sudo dpkg-reconfigure locales" but don't know how to set
locales to ISO-8859-1 as told in the second bug report as a solution.
Am not getting a clue where things have screwed up and how to fix this.
Is there any way out ? Any pointers ? :)
(Humble Request: Please don't say "use Vi", am using it for time being,
but for me 'emacs is emacs')
