I had a bunch of postgres databases on my server which were (as far
as I know) set to unicode. They were happily accepting tamil, telugu,
finnish etc characters. Recently I got complaints that the databases
were barfing on non-ascii characters - so they were. I looked and
found to my horror that most of them were in Latin1 encoding. Is it
possible that a dist-upgrade could change the encoding of the
databases from unicode to Latin1? An example is http://
nrcfosshelpline.in/code/. This database was all along accepting tamil
characters. After the dist-upgrade it is no longer doing so.
I am not sure if the encoding selections are stored in configuration files
