hi
well i dont think a user of an machine assigns a host id.....usually when u
look at licensing of products...we take a teh host id by running the util and
get it and then compute a unique license key...quiet an amateurish
approach...but i have heard many comps do it.....
according to my knowledge its a unique identifier...but talking to few
people....i came to know that the host id will differ from OS to OS......
(http://www.cygwin.com/)Cygwin is a Linux-like environment for Windows.
u down load the util depending on what tool u want to use and it creates a
shell like enivronment on ur windows desktop....

hi vino,
every os has its own driver files for computer hardware. If u install
windows in your system it allows u to assign one ip address or host id. if u
make partition for linux on that same machine linux can't allow the windows ip
address or host id.u hav to assign the new host id for linux.if u try to assign
same host id in linux it doesn't support and give u a the error message host
already exists.

same command in linux on the same machine.....
