 I wouldnt say inspired since rumours of something from google have
been floating around for a long time. It would be interesting since it
will feature Java extensively in its stack. Infact there was even a
rumour that gphone will have openmoko for its software part. Which of
course turned out to be false, since android is a software platform
which other manufacturers can use in their devices, much like
openmoko. Another thing is the apache license associated with it (whch
is GPL2.0 incompatible?). IMO, some GPL compatible license would have
been wonderful which would have provided smooth sharing of code
between the "linux phone platforms", openmoko, moblin et all.
I am also wondering about the degree of openness of the devices
running android, it would be quite cool if you could hack around and
make them run openmoko or moblin.

 I think they are going to use _standard_ devices and not going to
manufacture the devices. So, it should be posible to run any
openembedded based distro on these devices. You can start trying it
today itself instead of waiting for Android platform to be released.
 Moreover, if this idea succeeds it can turn out to be turning out to
be a turning point for the indutry. First of all Google has announced
that the software stack will be under APL. Secondly instead of
creating there _own_ mobile handset, _own_ mobile distro and another
ecosystem, Google is creating a consortium of manufactures, service
providers and software companies. Such a consortium, if works out,
will definatley be benificial for the consumer as well as small to
medium sized players.
 So lets see what comes out. May be we are looking at the unification
of mobile industry ?
