By the way logging in as root via the GUI on a shared system is not
such a great idea _unless_ you trust your users.
A clever user can easily use various ruses to get your password.
For example, it is relatively easy to run qemu in fullscreen mode and
get a prompt *exactly* like the one running on the base system. Now if
this qemu is running with key-logging, your root password would get
recorded.
There are many other such tricks.
It is safer to login over the network using ssh from a machine to
which only you have access. One other option is to use the SAK key
(usually Alt+SysRq+K) after switching to a text-mode console. This
will ensure that you are actually running the system "getty".
