2. note the contents of /boot/grub/menu.lst
3. type out those contents line by line like 'root hd(0,0)', 'vmlinuz

Is it able to boot after typing out all the commands?
Do a grub-install /dev/<your-hdd>
Tab expansions are possible in grub command prompt.
