[Ilugc] root not able to open X display in Slackware 9.1

Hi,

I have trouble opening X applications as root in Slackware 9.1.  All X
applications opens perfectly as a normal user.  However if I do:

su -

and then open say for e.g., gvim, it says:

E233: Can't open display.

all X applications throw the same error:

Error: Can't open display.

Even I tried setting the DISPLAY variable but no use.  Any clue how to
solve this issue?
