INFITT India Chapter & Tamil Virtual Academy

join in inviting you for the "Lecture Series on Tamil Internet - Talk 3"

Distinguished Lecture

Topic: "Technologies for catapulting Tamil to the digital forefront"

Speaker:
Dr A G Ramakrishnan
Medical Intelligence and Language Engineering Laboratory
Professor of Electrical Engineering
Indian Institute of Science
Bangalore.

Date & Time: Tuesday, January 7th 2014, 5.30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

Venue: Tamil Virtual Academy,
Government Data Centre Complex
Near Anna Centenary Library
Gandhi Mandapam Road, Kottur, Chennai 600 025
Ph 044-2220 1012

Abstract of the talk:

The following technologies for Tamil, developed by MILE Lab will be
demonstrated: Text-to-speech conversion, printed text recognition, open
vocabulary online handwriting recognition through a form-filling
application, Indic Keyboard IME for inputting Tamil on Windows, Linux and
Android platforms and text extraction from camera captured scene images of
display boards, road signs, etc. Basic capability to recognize the
extracted scene text and translation to English and Kannada will be
demonstrated through a web demo. The technical challenges, the effort and
enthusiasm necessary and systematic planning and data collection involved
in developing these technologies will be briefly covered. The audience can
obtain more information by asking specific technical questions on any of
the above topics. Finally, our current commitment to basic research
towards developing realistic speech recognition technology, called
“Machine Listening” will be covered. Machine listening is aimed at
“listening with attention” to realistic human speech, involving more than
one language (eg. Tamil and English), man-made non-speech sounds such as
laugh, cough, humming, sneeze and throat clearing and environmental noise.
The need for standardization and other requirements to bring all these
technologies to fruition through popular usage will be emphasized. Links:

Profile of the speaker:

Dr. A. G. Ramakrishnan is a professor of Electrical Engineering in Indian
Institute of Science. He received his Ph.D. degree in 1989 in Biomedical
Engineering from I.I.T Madras, India. He was selected as a Young Scientist
in 1994. Dr. Ramakrishnan received Sir Andrew Watt Kay Young Researcher's
Award (1992) from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons, Glasgow
for outstanding work in the field of medical and biomedical sciences. He
was President of Biomedical Engineering Society of India from 2002 to
2008. He has publications in 4 different IEEE Transactions: Biomed. Eng.;
Info. Technology in Biomedicine; Medical Imaging and Audio, Speech, and
Language Processing. His research areas include Neuroinspired Pattern
Recognition, Machine Listening, Human Computer Interface Technologies,
Medical and Document Image Processing, Online Handwriting Recognition,
Indian Language Technology Solutions, Natural Language Processing. He has
graduated 25 research scholars so far. He is leading a national research
consortium on “Recognition of online handwriting in Indian languages”.
OCRs developed by him for Tamil, Kannada and Telugu have been used to
convert more than 180 books to Braille books. The text to speech synthesis
system developed by him for Tamil and Kannada is available as a web demo
on his lab website. Indic Keyboard, an open source IME for most Indian
languages, is available on code.google.com for both Windows and Linux.
