While the hearing impaired have successfully adapted to the use of SMS, and can also rely on sign language, those with multiple disabilities still cannot independently communicate their thoughts and wishes. The 1st AAC conference was held at IIT-M in Dec 2005, and it led to the creation of Hope (software), Kavi and Vaani (hardware). We now need customized applications, especially in local languages.
