Been watching for the mate of the red shafted flicker I keep seeing in my neighbors yard - today I pulled up in the driveway and saw two in neighbors front yard pecking the ground - I pulled out my spotting scope and positively identified both. The were eating mostly grubs. I assume it is a male and female, but they are identically marked with red malar, black bib, spotted chest, orange-ish red under wing etc. Does anyone know if male and female look the same or different?
