Sheri and I strolled the alleys in Tech Terrace yesterday morning. Mostly the
resident birds, a number of them carrying twigs, grass, or food. It was also
curious that most of the kites were not in the park, where one often sees a
dozen or more at a time; instead, we kept spotting them perched and mostly
hidden in the backyard trees. I assume they're nesting in those spots; the park
has lost some of its more kite-worthy trees in recent years. We kept an ear
out for Inca Doves but did not hear or see any.
We did see a late Turkey Vulture, and enjoyed viewing a very busy and not shy
at all Western Wood Pewee. Right after we split up, I saw a black-chinned
hummingbird, female, which as far as I can recall is the first hummer I've seen
in the neighborhood so far. Her beak was absolutely yellow with pollen.
