All corvids (jays, crows, ravens) have a pouch they use to carry food to cache
it somewhere else. And they’ll also “fake cache” food to throw off anything
that might be watching them. Corvids are my favorite!

Last year I watched an adult western kingbird attempt to feed its fully
fledged young a cicada while they were both on the lines overhead. The chick
who was same size as the adult just couldn’t get it down. The parent would
repeatedly take it back and try to get those large wings off to no avail.
After about 30 minutes the adult finally downed the cicada, wings and all.
Quite entertaining.

After unsuccessfully trying to find a place to wedge the acorn so he could
whack it open with his beak, he picked it up and swallowed it. Is this a
convenient way of carrying the acorn somewhere? Or does he plan to digest
it?
Just wondering. And I love how the commonest birds continue to amaze.
