Greetings All: With interesting weather to the south and west of Lubbock early this morning I decided to do a little birding that way - just looking for a free carwash:) I spent 3.5 hours in Terry County and, though just about everything (except city parks) was bone dry found a few interesting birds including 1 Tree Swallow just north of the intersection of Highway 168 and CR 1698, 1 Willow Flycatcher at the intersection of Highway 168 and CR 1698, 2 Green-winged Teals/3 Spotted Sandpipers/1 Solitary Sandpiper/2 Stilt Sandpipers/4 Northern Rough-winged Swallows/1 Yellow Warbler/2 male Bronzed Cowbirds at Gillham-Howell Park, 1 Calliope Hummingbird/1 Western Wood Pewee/1 Least Flycatcher/1 Yellow Warbler at Coleman Park, 3 Western Wood Pewees/1 Northern Waterthrush/3 Yellow Warblers at Lost Draw. I spent 2.5 hours in Lynn County. Sadly, Frog Lake, Skeen Playa, the salt lake just south of Tahoka, the Tahoka Cemetery Complex, and all of the playas that were popping in late spring were bone dry. I did find some goodies, though, including 1 Yellow Warbler in New Moore, 1 Western Wood Pewee at Frog Lake, 2 Western Wood Pewees/1 Willow Flycatcher/1 Chipping Sparrow/1 female Western Tanager/1 STUNNING male Lazuli Bunting at the big woodlot near Highway 380 x CR AA, 4 Black-necked Stilts/1 Western Sandpiper at a dugout near the intersection of Highway 380 and FM 212, 7 Cattle Egrets at the intersection of FM 212 and Highway 84. I then spent an hour at Clapp Park in Lubbock. It was a bit hot and more than a bit slow by the time I got there but I did kick out a few notables including 2 Olive-sided Flycatcher, 2 Western Wood Pewees, 1 Least Flycatcher, 1 Yellow Warbler, and 1 immature Bronzed Cowbird. Not bad for yet another hot, August day in a region sliding back into drought. Anthony 'Fat Tony' Hewetson; Lubbock
