I wish my story was as interesting. I was just looking for something to do
outside to get some exercise here. Every time I rode my bike the tires would
get punctured by goatheads. I stop so frequently while birding that I doubt I
get much exercise, but it sure is fun and my new found passion has taken me to
some wonderful places to see some wonderful things! I can’t imagine life
without watching birds now!

I grew up (as tall as I ever got!) on a farm SE of Hereford and I became a
naturalist at a pretty young age.
The only "Bird Guide" I had had only about a dozen of the most common birds
in the US, so I was pretty ignorant about birds.
For example, I thought the Lark Buntings were Bobolinks, because that was one
that was in the guide.
Also "Horned Larks" were called "Wheatbirds".
I really got in to birding when our minimally brain damaged son, was
interested in all things in nature, then we really got hooked
when the WHITE WINGED CROSBILL came and spent from December 1975 to March
1976 in our yard and saw birding "nuts"
come from all over the state and some from out of state came to see it!
I also became a runner in my 40's and got hooked on racing with the West
Texas Running Club and set many age group course
records in my 50"s and still hold 31 0f the 36 course records I set. I always
ran by myself mainly because I could not take the time
to go meet someone else, because I had to just grab the time when I was off
work and also because there was not many of my
friends who could run the same pace as me.
I never ran with my ears plugged with a radio because I always wanted to hear
the sounds of nature. Many of my long runs took
me to the country roads SW of Lubbock and frequently I heard birds and
occasionally would stop to investigate.
