I deserved an easy one after being shrike-less for months and months and months.
But yeah, I expected it to be like a needle in a hay stack. Imagine my
surprise when I scanned and saw that little
dude about 50 feet away out in the open.

I met up with Sheri Anderson at Lake Six this evening at 7:00 and we
had a twofold purpose: she was going to show me where some
photographable Dickcissels were to be had and I was going to show her
the stretch of lake that favors Least Bittern during the last hour or
so of dark (a good time to catch the birds in the open).
Success on both fronts - close to a dozen Dickcissels along the old
railway grade running north from the trestle and the Least Bittern (my
best photograph below - low light, had to use the flash on my digital,
never the crispest shots) spotted by Sheri about fifty feet upstream
from the spillway on the north side of the lake. Sheri spotted the
bird just before 9:00 (when it popped out of the depths of the reeds
for a looksee) and it flew upriver just a few minutes later.
eBird reports will be filed eventually.
