Afternoon All,
Just wanted to reiterate what so many others have been saying--but
especially from the perspective of someone new who moved to Lubbock from
outside the region during the midst of COVID, and has been learning to bird
better in the pandemic era. My wife and I have had a hard go of actually
meeting any flesh and blood people this past year. Most of my classes I
taught as a new faculty member at Tech were online, I met very few of my
departmental colleagues, and my wife had Zoom meetings in her office for
most of the school-year.
And so the LEAS listserv and the few run-ins with fellow naturalists in the
field and at local parks has been one of the human-highlights for me in
2020-21. Those of you who I've gotten a chance to meet over the last few
months have been as warm and friendly in-person as you've been over email,
and I'm looking forward to getting to know many more of you in the coming
years as things get back to normal.
So thanks for the friendly welcome over this past pandemic year and just
know how much I appreciate being looped into things as an errant
midwesterner on the South Plains! Special gratitude to our coordinators and
leaders of LEAS, the listserv, and the West Texas naturalist community.

It seems to me that the postings on the list increased with the onset of
Covid and its social distancing, which happened to coincide with Spring
migration. This listserve was, for me, a sense of community that helped
fill in for the loss of community I was used to--working in a busy college
department, hanging out at J & B Coffee.
This community, like my vaccine, is one aspect of the pandemic I hope to
continue.

repeat that: only a few emails per year! We no longer had a sense of
community and LEAS was on the verge of collapse. I think that the changes
that have occurred over the past year+ are incredible. Our membership has
grown and so has our sense of community. Groups like LEAS are created just
for that purpose. So that people can share similar interests while learning
and growing together in a supportive environment. Each of us may have
different ideas about the purpose of the listserv but I am grateful that it
has been revived and hope that everyone feels encouraged to participate.
