Leaving work a little after 4, I spotted a single Long-billed Curlew in the
unfenced field west of Spur 331 between the southeast loop and East 50th (north
of the railroad). The field is signed for no access and since the Curlew was
distant from the road and the wind was excessive, it was not a great viewing
experience. Hope I didn’t misidentify an Eskimo Curlew 😜.
Encouraged by the Curlew, I made a run down Liquor Store Road and Boles Lake
Road. Liquor Store Road turned up an estimated 100-200 Lark Buntings, still in
transition plumage, so no full black-and-white birds yet. Estimate is pretty
loose because many of them were hunkered down in the grass and weeds. Also
spotted 4-6 Horned Larks and a single, seemingly lost Dark-eyed Junco.
Boles Lake Road turned up two Northern Harriers. There was also a herd of 13
deer that disappeared into the weeds on the back side of the Boles Lake
lakebed.
